Visible to the naked eye from a dark location, Andromeda is a massive floating island of around 1 trillion stars. Despite being a neighbor to our smaller Milky Way galaxy, it still took more than 2 million years for this light to reach the camera.
Andromeda is heading directly towards us. Its Doppler shift shows that it should collide with our galaxy in several billion years. The Milky Way and Andromeda will then combine to form the “Milk-O-Meda” galaxy.
