This is what may happen to our Sun when it reaches the end of its life. As a star runs out of fuel, the hot core heats the outer layers of gas and expels them into space creating this giant smoke ring. No need to hold your breath though, this may not happen to the Sun for another 4.5 million million years.
The Ring’s central star is thought to have exploded about 70 centuries ago and is expanding at almost 1 million miles a day. It’s located around 1300 trillion miles away and is far too distant to reach us. The blue-green color come from heated oxygen and the red from hydrogen.
It’s also extremely large. If placed in the center of our solar system, the Ring would stretch almost a quarter of the way to the nearest star.
