APOD: Sunspot in the Old Solar Cycle

The first sunspot of Solar Cycle 24. Two enormous solar filaments of hot, hydrogen gas hover over the Chromosphere. The brighter glow of an active region accompanies the filaments as a prominence fades along the limb.
